Basic tips to prevent water pipes from freezing:
- Insulate pipes as able, especially those located in unheated or drafty areas (crawl spaces, next to uninsulated walls).
- Wrap pipes in heat tape or heat cables.
- Open cabinet doors so heat can get to pipes under sinks and appliances near uninsulated walls.
- Make sure heat is left on and no lower than 55 degrees.
- Set thermostat to maintain the same temperature day and night.
- Keep your garage doors shut, especially if you have exposed pipes in your garage.
Concerned about your pipes? Check your water temperature:
- It is suggested to run your cold water for 5 to 10 minutes and then checking the temperature with a thermometer.
- If the water temperature is under 38 degrees you may want to take additional measures to protect your pipes.
What to do if your pipes do freeze:
- Call a plumber if needed.
- Shut off water supply.
- Avoid using flame to thaw pipes.
