Basic tips to prevent water pipes from freezing:

  • Insulate pipes as able, especially those located in unheated or drafty areas (crawl spaces, next to uninsulated walls).
  • Wrap pipes in heat tape or heat cables.
  • Open cabinet doors so heat can get to pipes under sinks and appliances near uninsulated walls.
  • Make sure heat is left on and no lower than 55 degrees.
  • Set thermostat to maintain the same temperature day and night.
  • Keep your garage doors shut, especially if you have exposed pipes in your garage.

Concerned about your pipes? Check your water temperature:

  • It is suggested to run your cold water for 5 to 10 minutes and then checking the temperature with a thermometer.
  • If the water temperature is under 38 degrees you may want to take additional measures to protect your pipes.

What to do if your pipes do freeze:

  • Call a plumber if needed.
  • Shut off water supply.
  • Avoid using flame to thaw pipes.
